Understand it first
What is an IPO?
An Initial Public Offering (IPO) is when a company offers its shares to the public for the first time before listing on a stock exchange. Investors bid within a price band during a short window, usually three working days.
Mainboard IPOs list on the main NSE/BSE platforms; SME IPOs list on the exchanges’ SME platforms and typically involve smaller companies, larger lot sizes and lower liquidity.
Before you invest, consider
- Read the RHP: business, financials, promoters and use of proceeds.
- “Grey market premium” figures quoted online are unofficial and often wrong.
- Allotment is not guaranteed when an issue is oversubscribed.
- SME IPOs carry higher risk and lower liquidity.
Frequently asked
How do I apply for an IPO?
Through ASBA in your bank’s net-banking or a UPI mandate via a registered broker, using your demat account. The amount is blocked, not debited, until allotment.
What happens if I don’t get an allotment?
The blocked amount is released to your bank account after the basis of allotment is finalised.
Should IPOs be part of a long-term plan?
They can be, in moderation. Diversified mutual funds usually form the core, with direct equity such as IPOs as a smaller satellite allocation.
